3600 Series Routers

Cisco has three primary models for the Cisco 3600 Series Routers.  The Cisco 3620 is a 1RU dual slot (Cisco network module slot) modular router chassis.  The CISCO3620 is a great unit where rack space may be tight and you simply don't need the extra slots for expansion.  We see customers populate the 3620 with two NM-2FE2W modules giving them 4 10/100 Fast Ethernet and 4 available WIC slots for expansion including Cisco WIC Cards like the WIC-1DSU-T1 for T1 line solutions.

Next up the ladder is the Cisco 3640 Modular Router with 4 Network Module slots for expansion.  The 3640 has a faster processor than the 3620 and more memory capacity to run voice applications or support more T1 lines using WIC-1DSU-T1 Cards.  We've had customers outfit the CISCO3640 with one NM-2FE2W, and 3 NM-1E2W in order to achieve the 8 WIC slots to install 8 WIC-1DSU-T1 lines coming in from branch locations.

The high-end Cisco 3600 series router is the Cisco 3660.  This 6 slot modular router has a swappable I/O board which can give the router either one or two on-board 10/100 Fast Ethernet ports.  Most customers seek out the CISCO3662 configuration for the Dual FE Ports on-board.  This unit comes standard with one A/C power supply, but has a slot for a second AC power supply.  Because this chassis has the on-board fast ethernet, it leaves all six expansion slots open for use with any combination of Cisco Network Modules.

We often see customers package these 3600 series routers with voice network modules including the NM-HD-2V and Voice Interface Cards like the VIC2-4FXO for Voice Over IP (VOIP) Solutions.  Another popular add-on is the NM-16ESW, which adds (16) 10/100 Fast Ethernet Ports and the NM-16ESW-PWR which has Power Over Ethernet (POE) for the 16 Ports.  If you need the router to have two additional WIC slots for expansion, then you'll need the NM-2W.  If you're getting a T3 line for 45 Mbps of throughput, you'll be looking at the NM-1T/E3.  You'll find many of the available Cisco Network Modules here at our store as well.  If you can't find it in our store, just give us a call.
